For my MMP, I really wanted to focus more on what technology is currently being utilized in the classroom and more importantly what is coming in the future. Technology has been growing rapidly for the past couple of decades, but it seems like technology in the classroom is always trying to catch up. Technology has the ability to alienate individuals, however it also allows for a lot of collaborative work to occur. Students are able to express themselves in different ways rather than just be restricted to essays and/or written exams.
By joining Google + communities devoted to education and technology, I am already completing the analysis portion of the ADDIE model. The three communities that I enjoyed are TED, E-Learning and Digital Cultures, and Technology and Innovation in Education. TED "is a nonpartisan nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks," (TED.com). TED Talks are one of the greatest things on the internet. While it is not specifically meant for educational purposes, there is so much one can learn that can be applied to the classroom. There are videos covering almost every topic from clean water solutions to the use of virtual reality in sports. TED Talks are helpful for the second two parts of the ADDIE model, design and development. Viewers can see how scientists and researchers are trying to develop solutions to issues facing different groups around the world.
Technology and Innovation in Education is perfect for my topic choice. The community is designed a space to talk about, "the intersection of research and practice relating to innovation in teaching and learning," (Technology and Innovation in Education). This community not only talks about how to use new technology in the classroom, but also general technology news. It offers a lot of insight as to what is being constructed for use in the classroom in the near future.
The final community I decided to join was E-Learning and Digital Culture because I have taken many classes as a student online. Teaching an online class is something that is very interesting to me and something I would like to do in the future. This community discusses what it is like to teach in the digital age and the problems that come with it. By hearing other people's testimonies, I can see what works and what are some things that I should avoid. The community seems to be very supportive and a great place to share new ideas.

Hi Ashleigh,
ReplyDeleteI also am a HUGE FAN of Ted talks and I have decided to join that community after finding out they even had a community. The TEd talks can also perhaps be seen ans Implementation in the Addie Model because we are presenting the Ted Talks in oure classroom and students are reacting, learning and behaving as the ADDIE Model suggest. How do you incorporate the Ted Talks into your lessons? When introducing the Ted Talks I have students analyze some of the central ideas of a Ted Talk and have students relate the TEd Talk to a Non Fiction Text. Students then Analyze the meaning of both the visual text and the written Texts.
I am really glad you posted this! Last Week I showed my Students a Ted Talk called "Danger's of a Single Story"
https://www.ted.com/talks/chimamanda_adichie_the_danger_of_a_single_story We analyzed some of the stereotypes of African Culture and Western Civilization in Conjunction with "How to Write about Africa". We looked at the visual text and the written texts before we made our way into the novel "Things Fall Apart By Chinua Achebe
How to write about Africa

Hi Ashleigh,
ReplyDeleteGood points! However, you need to be more specific in terms of how you plan to use Ted Talks to shape learning beyond the surface level. Ted Talks are wonderful and can serve as a tool for learning enhancement. Ted Talks now provide an option to users for creating their own Ted Talks. Maybe you would be interested in designing TED talks that can be used in a specific content area. Also, you mention that you are interested in teaching an online class. So, I would like to encourage you too look into Schoology or Itunes U and perhaps you can design your own course. The idea is that, you will integrate what you are learning in our course into formulating a design of your own that addresses or applies to an area of interest.
Hi Ashleigh,
ReplyDeleteLoved your selections took a look at the content on the sites and found the TED Talks by brilliant kids interesting and a course on Captivate Rapid e-learning software which I have been learning to use at work. Sometimes you have to scroll through the content to find the gems that are in these sites. I hope they were helpful. I would be interested in how you used the TED site. At my last contract role we had access to the Ted library but i found it difficult sometimes to go through all the available content and find exactly what I was looking for. for example the e-learning industry has site a list of 10 relevant TED talks but I didn't find all of them to be helpful. (Adora Svitak: What adults can learn from kids was quite good though). thanks of the post.
